Character-counting guide

Count characters, graphemes, words and reading time live

See code-point and user-perceived character counts together with words, sentences, paragraphs, UTF-8 bytes and practical publishing limits. Your text stays in the browser.

Characters and emoji

Unicode characters and grapheme clusters are shown separately, so combined emoji and accented characters are easier to understand before publishing.

Publishing limits

Check the remaining space for common 280-character posts, 160-character SMS messages, 60-character title tags and 160-character meta descriptions.

Length and readability

Sentence, paragraph and estimated reading-time totals provide a quick sense of structure. Always confirm exact limits in the destination platform.

Frequently asked questions

Does an emoji count as one character?

The tool shows both Unicode code points and grapheme clusters. A combined emoji can use several code points while appearing as one grapheme.

Is the text uploaded?

No. Counting runs locally in your browser and the text is not sent to the server.
